The Visual Journal
a class for anyone who wants to free themselves through creativity
Inclusive & For Anyone
I mean anyone. Past students include graphic designers, fine artists, VPs of banks, people who have never touched an art supply, scholars, therapists, etc. Classes stay small so we build community.
Not Another How-To Class
You will not learn to draw, although we will draw. You will not learn to write, although we will write. The path is not one in which you learn a task, complete it, and build your skill level. It has nothing to do with skill.
Experience Life with Greater Ease
This is an inexplicable mysterious process in which you will build a new level of confidence and willingness to explore and experiment. What goes on in the studio will carry into the rest of your life.

Reviews from Past Students
Every Wednesday evening I would drive to Sharon's studio in Santa Monica and I encountered a safe space to express my creativity. Through guided meditations, writings, deep discussions, suggested artistic exploration in an environment that was accepting, I began to explore my creative journey.

I’m a lifelong visual artist whose experience with art classes has been almost universally painful, or empty at best. The only exception was Sharon Kagan’s Visual Journal class. While it was many years ago I took the class (because Sharon stopped teaching for a long time), the lingering effect has felt profound.

There was no right or wrong way to create art. Using various media... oil pastel, collage, paint or whatever medium you wanted to explore, a new world opened up for me. Sharon also had a wonderful way of forming a sense of community, an environment of kindred spirits willing to explore and share.

Through Sharon's guidance, I was able to recognize that I had something valid to say and the "artist" within me began to form on a different level than I had experienced in the past. The powerfulness of that experience was truly transformational and it opened up a new life for me as an artist. I will be forever grateful to Sharon for that.

I took your class every five years there for a while. And you definitely changed my life

Attending the Visual Journal group was an essential tool for me to break through "artist block." The various exercises/advice we all did as a group and as individuals was a valuable journey to explore and learn about myself and my art. I not only learned so much from Sharon, but from the people I met over the years in the classes - artists and non-artists. Everyone was so unique, special - each person in their own way helped expand everyone’s creativity in the group. I learned to persevere in doing my art, my way…fighting back the Inner Critic.
